The End of Summer

Friday, August 30. It’s the first day of the last weekend of summer. In honor of the long holiday, Max and I are going to Florida. Three months I’ve lived in middle Georgia and I haven’t been to the beach once! The car’s all loaded up and I’m typing this as we drive down the interstate. I’m looking forward to soaking up some sun, sipping fruity drinks on the beach and spending quality time with the best husband in the world.

More than a relaxing mini vacation, this is the first of three weekends before Max leaves for his second deployment. This time he’s shipping off to Afghanistan. He leaves just over three weeks from now.

To send him off in style (he’ll be gone until February), we’ve decided to spend three amazing weekends together. First, we’ll be relaxing in style on Amelia Island near Jacksonville, then we’ll be partying it up in Savannah with Max’s sister, and our last weekend together, we’re off to Disney World for five fantastic days. Go big or go home, right? 🙂

Max was really hoping to get tagged for this deployment. With America pulling troops out of the Middle East this year, his chances of going dwindled by the day. Little did we know that him coming back early for our wedding would put his name at the top of the list for this rotation.

On one hand, I’m not exactly thrilled that a) he’s leaving in 20-something days b) he’ll have been deployed for approximately 3/4ths of 2013 and c) I moved 1200 miles only for him to deploy half a world away. I refuse to be pessimistic though. Deployments are apart of our life together; it’s to be expected when you marry someone in the military.

This is our generation’s war and Max feels compelled to serve his nation. It’s why we both signed up for the military: to give back to our country and defend freedom.

Happy Labor Day weekend, everyone. Hope you all have a fantastic time living it up. Fingers crossed the weather’s beautiful and that time slows down long enough for us all to enjoy the holiday!

  1. Erin & Max,
Hope you have the best 3 weekends EVER!
Deployments are a big part of being in the military. Uncle Steve was on the SAC team when he was in the Air Force. His bags were always packed and stored in the living room closet – ready to go if the phone rang.
We are so proud of you both. Max, as always stay safe and come home soon. Erin, you’re such a busy girl time will fly and he’ll be back before you know it.
I love your blog and read everyone of your entries!
    Love to you both,
    Aunt Kathy
