Amelia Island: Day One

Labor Day weekend was the first of three back-to-back mini vacations for Max and I. We loaded up the car with snacks, turned the tunes up and hit the road.

Other than being north of Jacksonville, Florida, I had no idea what to expect when it came to Amelia Island. I figured there would be a sandy beach, maybe a charming downtown area, hopefully a few good restaurants. Honestly, it didn’t really matter if the island offered much by way of entertainment – I was so happy to have a four day mini vacation with Max. Winning!

Side note: when I got back to work on Tuesday, I stumbled across an article on CNN entitled “20 more can’t miss U.S. beaches.” That’s right, Amelia Island is #16. We didn’t realize how lucky we were when we picked this getaway for our Labor Day weekend shenanigans!

We spent a majority of our time at the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the warm water.

Following our beach excursion, we drove to the other side of the island to check out Fort Clinch. There was an awesome drawbridge, some impressive 19th century buildings and of course a phenomenal view of Cumberland Sound.

As we drove through the historic downtown, I noticed on our map that Pippi Longstocking’s house was just a few blocks away. Imagine my luck! I loved her as a kid!  I even dressed up as Pippi for Halloween one year. It was great.

Of course, Pippi was originally from Sweden so when I saw this on the map, I was a bit confused…until I googled. The house on Amelia Island was the setting for the 1988 movie, The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking. Unfortunately, Pippi’s house wasn’t open to the public so Max and I had to snap a few sneak photos. hehe 🙂

Our first day ended at the Salty Pelican, a fantastic indoor/outdoor bar/restaurant situated on the west side of the island and right in the heart of the historic district. After some oysters, shrimp and po’ boys, we watched the sunset. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Check back tomorrow for more photos of our second day!

  1. Wow, what a nice weekend…here is something to google…I think the photos of the
fort looks just like where they filmed North and South, could it be this is where George and Orry Main first met?? Best mini series ever…

  2. Erin,
If you have time Google :
Jekyll Island, Its an island off the coast of the Georgia, in Glynn County; it is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia.

    • Just googled it! It’s actually super close to Amelia Island! Max and I will have to check it out after he gets back from his deployment. Thanks for the tip 😉
